Every grade level at MJS receives a hands-on robotics unit that is supported with computer science lessons. Students begin to learn about algorithms, sequencing and other STEAM concepts through screen-free educational robots such as our Blue Bots and KIBO robots in Kindergarten through Second Grade. Students program the Blue Bots to follow commands and move across a map that completes tasks connected to concepts they learn in the classroom. KIBO Robots challenge students to arrange tangible wooden programming blocks in a sequence to execute commands. The Lower School robotics experience ends with Third and Fourth graders programming Sphero Robots, their first screen controlled and coded robot.

Middle School continues building student's robotics and coding skills through collaboration units with Science classes. The Tech and Innovation team works with the Science Department to identify robotic and coding integrations within the flow of their curriculum. Middle School uses robotic and coding tools like Sphero, Micro:bit, and Strawbees to show and support learning topics in the classroom. Students are also able to begin participating in the after school Mayfield First LEGO League Competitive team in Middle School.

Lower School
Students have access to classroom iPads that allow them to develop healthy digital habits such as taking care of devices, basic programming skills, and digital research. The iPads promote multimodal expressions of their learning through digital art, podcasting, or video creation. Students also enrich their learning experience through Math and Language Arts apps that help reinforce classroom concepts.

Middle School
iPads continue to stay on campus during our students' first year of Middle School in order to build healthy technology habits as they begin taking their devices from class to class. In grades six through eight students start to take devices to and from school to support larger projects and greater autonomy. Teachers use devices to create learning experiences that would otherwise not be possible, such as multimedia projects and collaborative assignments.

Responsible Use Policy
Our Responsible Use Policy (RUP) outlines clear expectations for how students use technology. It emphasizes using devices for learning, interacting respectfully with others, protecting privacy, and making responsible choices online.

Digital Citizenship Week
Students participate in Digital Citizenship Week each October, engaging in activities and conversation about the intentional and balanced use of technology. These lessons continue throughout the year to support students in making thoughtful choices online.

Family Support
We partner with families to support healthy technology habits at home. We provide weekly resources in our Maywire newsletter, and parent education opportunities are offered throughout the year.

Design Lab (DLAB)
Our DLAB is a Maker Space designed to focus on creative problem solving through projects and hands-on learning. We focus on experiential learning through the Design Thinking process, which helps students develop resourcefulness, resiliency, and creativity. Utilizing everyday materials such as cardboard, tape and glue, as well as more advanced tools such as our 3D printers, laser cutters, cardboard routers, and vinyl cutters, students experience the full range of prototyping and developing design solutions to solve real- world problems.

Technology Lab (Tech Lab)
The Tech Lab is a resource for all teachers on campus to allow students a more powerful device when creating movies, editing photos, or engaging in AI lessons. Students also engage in robotics activities and practice their keyboarding skills. The desktop computers allow for a more enhanced digital research experience. The Tech Lab also houses our Yearbook Committee (led by students), Robotics Teams, and Tinker Time events.
