Integral to Mayfield's program and daily experience is the focus on the development of the whole person. Confident and creative, our middle school students embrace challenge and success with a well-balanced perspective. A safe and supportive environment allows inquiry, creativity, and growth. Whether speaking at Morning Prayer, embracing design thinking in science, or collaborating with classmates on stage or the field, opportunity is prevalent, relationships are prioritized, and discovery encouraged.
Student growth and relationship building are at the heart of the middle school experience at Mayfield Junior School. Our program is designed to be responsive to the academic and personal development of our students. This time of transition from childhood to adolescence should not just feel like a stepping stone to the next steps of a student's educational journey.
Coupled with the core subjects like Humanities, Math, Science, and World Language we expect students to take courses in Religion, Physical Education, Drama, Music, Art, Technology, as well as Health and Personal Development. Middle school is also a time when new learning experiences are introduced in the curriculum. The academic program expands and students have the opportunity to engage in elective courses, join co-curriculars, participate on athletic sports teams, perform in theatrical and musical productions, lead morning prayer, and support service learning activities.
Our teachers are caring adults who focus on what is aligned with our mission and what is best for students. As a culmination of the K-8 journey, our 8th graders are academically and personally prepared to transition into a college preparatory high school curriculum.
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is an important transitional year and much care is taken to help students feel comfortable as they navigate the first year of middle school. Executive functioning skills are key as students ease into greater responsibility, participate in an expanded academic and enrichment program, experience their first overnight field trip, and have the opportunity to join co-curricular classes.

Sixth Grade
Sixth grade is a busy year at Mayfield. Students have developed socially and emotionally, becoming more self-aware and adaptable. Students look forward to starting the KPal program - a community-building pairing of sixth grade and kindergarten students. Sixth graders delve into personal reflection in their presentation of the Stations of the Cross, tackle engineering and design in science, find their voice writing argumentative essays in Humanities, and participate in some Mustang Sports events and tournaments.

Seventh Grade
Seventh graders begin building leadership skills as they look forward to the eighth grade year and high school applications. The curriculum encourages individual perspective and creativity as they examine how energy, matter, and human innovation shape our planet in science, and ask themselves 'How do cultural encounters impact contemporary society?' in Humanities. In the spring, a wellness retreat provides an opportunity for self-reflection and a trip to Philadelphia builds connection.

Eighth Grade
Eighth grade at Mayfield is a year of opportunity, responsibility and growth. As the final year in their Mayfield journey and perhaps the most anticipated, students share big expectations with a little apprehension and enthusiasm to make the most of every moment. From organizing major school events such as the Harvest Festival to becoming role models as Student Council officers and heads of School Families and navigating the secondary school application process, there is much to accomplish. Given the opportunity to meet the challenges of the year as individuals and as a group, the class develops strong bonds, and each member grows in confidence.
