Physical Education and Athletics
Mayfield's athletics program cultivates wellness, skills, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity - all while having fun.

Physical Education
Lower School
All Lower School students participate in physical education classes and athletic activities in their weekly schedule. Students build foundational motor skills through play-based movement. They practice running, dodging, throwing, catching, and striking in simple games that teach balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. Cooperative games encourage teamwork, communication, and respect for others.
Middle School
Classes focus on fundamental skills in the areas of gross motor skills, fine motor skills, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, strength, and muscle coordination. The program emphasizes cooperative learning and teaches students motivational strategies such as goal setting and self-reflection, social interaction, problem solving, shared leadership, and challenge and risk in a safe environment. Fitness awareness grows through the exploration of different sports such as soccer, basketball, and volleyball.

Athletics
The Mayfield Junior School Interscholastic Athletic Program is a voluntary program, open to all students in grades seven and eight. Mayfield belongs to the Middle School Independent League and has been competing at a high level as a member of this long established league for the last 40+ years.
Mustang athletes are taught the value of good sportsmanship, being a team player, and what it means to be part of a team. Student athletes are offered the opportunity to play and compete on a team, regardless of experience, and invited to learn what it feels like to be part of a successful, winning tradition.
